The Xbox Variety Pack was named by Amazon.com customers on our Computer & Video Games Discussion Board. It includes the Xbox game system (and all necessary cables), adventure game Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee, football game NFL Fever, and sci-fi action game Halo. The pack also includes an additional Xbox controller, so you can play your games with a friend, and a six-month subscription to Electronic Gaming Monthly, so you can keep up on the latest game news, reviews, and previews.
Take the power and flexibility of a dedicated computer gaming system and combine it with the easy-to-use, instant-on format of a high-end console system and what do you get? Well, if you also add in DVD playback ability and broadband Internet connectivity, you get Xbox.
The advanced components inside Xbox make it the undisputed powerhouse among current game consoles. A 733 MHz Intel main processor and 233 MHz graphics processor from industry leader nVidia deliver photorealistic graphics in real time. A cavernous hard drive stores saved games and characters, making flimsy memory sticks obsolete. The built-in Ethernet port enables super-fast multiplayer online gaming over a broadband Internet connection. Four game controller ports allow you and three of your buddies to play at the same time, or you can use them for other peripherals such as gamepads, light guns, voice-activated headsets, and who knows what else?
But Xbox has more going for it than fancy innards. I must admit, I was pretty heisetant to believe that the Xbox would be great. Unlike most fanboys of the big black box I didn't really give a damn about how powerful the thing was, I just wanted to see what games would be good (...)
Now that the thing has been out a while I'm looking at it's lineup and saying straight out that it is doing a hell of a lot better than expected. I think a similar wave of comments like this came after the PS1 launched in 1995. Also, the Xbox follows a plan similar to the PS1's. This means it could very well succeed in dominating the consoles over the next 5 years. HALO is by far one of the best games of the year, and no other game out there (sorry Metal Gear Solid 2, (...)) can top it. Also, Oddworld is very good, but you have to be much more of a hardcore gamer to appreciate it. NFL Fever is good, not great. You'd be better off selling it (...) and using the money to get Madden. Other than that this package is a 5 star deal.

Now, back to Xbox. It IS a the most powerful system. (...) And Microsoft is backed up with lots of money (that's good,,, right?). If this was 4 months ago I would not be writing this review (I am the 'wait-and-see' type of person). I also would of never thought that I would prefer Xbox over Gamecube (I was really hating fanboys back then). But now I like Xbox more than Gamecube, except for the controller.
The bottom line: Get this, Sell NFL Fever, and get the Mad Catz extra controllers (they are much better than Microsoft's (...)).
