For those unfamiliar with the series, a mysterious corporation has secretly been performing ungodly biotech experiments in the sleepy little town of Raccoon City. When reports of gory attacks come in from nearby areas, two crack military squads are sent to investigate. Players take the role of either sharpshooter Chris Redfield or demolitions expert Jill Valentine to track down the source of the town's problems--specifically, something in a decaying mansion that's mutating animals into grotesque killers and turning humans into bloodthirsty zombies. Supplies and ammunition are scarce, so players have to know when to fight, when to run, and how to keep their wits about them. Players can't afford to waste their shots and expect their characters to survive. The story is being retrofitted with motion-captured animation, next-generation graphics, real-time lighting and shadow effects, new areas, and newly rendered in-game video segments to create an even more cinematic experience. Also, a redesigned combat system lets players attack and defend themselves with a variety of items found in the environment.
Buyer Reviews : The Survival Horror genre's poster child: Resident Evil has been revived and recreated to give Gamecube gamers and old Playstation fans of the original another scare, and what a refreshing scare it is. The new Resident Evil has come back in full force for new gamers to enjoy while still giving more reasons for RE veterans to return, here's why..
Graphics: Right off the bat, new and old fans alike will notice the impressive graphical leap the series has taken shape to. The character models look outstanding to say the least and fans of the origianl will notice the drastic makeover to the mansion with the inclusion of added rooms and how the game does not load when you walk up any set of stairs. The monsters look graphically beautiful from the immensly detailed Hunters down to the gaping wounds found in the zombies, I foreworn this is not for those with weak stomachs.
Sound: The Voice acting is well done and eclipses the pitiful acting of the original ten fold. The dialouge also changes a bit to remove the 'cheeziness' found in the first game. There isn't much sound in terms of music, but the moans of zombies to the surprise shattering glass of an intruding monster will have you looking over your shoulder more often than not.
Difficulty: The difficulty in the game is challenging at times but not overwhelming. Some of the puzzles require a bit more brain power than others but nothing to difficult. You may find yourself without any ammo at times though if you play recklessly and that would raise the challenge more than it should be. BE CONSERTIVE and don't shoot everything you see ALL THE TIME.
Gameplay-the main reason: Though RE may seem to be the same game from the Playstation age, make no mistake, this Resident Evil is NOT A REHASH of the original with a pretty face. The new version is packed with a new intersting side story, brand new locations outside and in within the mansion, and a new combat feature that uses defenses items to keep zombies and other monsters from grabbing and damaging you. The combat overall though is similar to the original with auto-aiming and now has the much needed 180 spin. Most item and enemy locations have been changed since the original and the puzzles have been revamped to make playing the new version as fresh as possible.
The only complaint I would have is that the control would take a little to get used to, especially if you are used to Playstation controls, but the transtion to the Gamecube controller is well executed. The replay value is also not that high, though the game does include interesting extra modes to raise the replay a little but not much.
Overall, Resident Evil is a must-have for any Gamecube owner as this is the only real killer-app for the Gamecube besides Super Smash Bros. Melee. It will keep you at the edge of your seat and delivers spectacular gameplay for old and new fans and will have you waiting anxiously for the next conversion. Resident Evil is worth every penny you spent for it and then some, please purchase, you'll be glad you did! :)
