Your actions define your character, and your gameplay changes and evolves in response to your actions. Confront the assassins' guild, and they take out a contract on you. Impress them, and they try to recruit you instead. No two sagas are the same in the world of Morrowind. The end result is the most open-ended RPG possible--one with an infinite number of possible paths through the game.
Buyer Reviews : ELDER SCROLLS III: MORROWIND for the Xbox represents an unprecedented accomplishment. It's simply one of the biggest video games ever released; if not, the biggest role-playing game ever.
As the 3rd installment in the ambitious and long-running computer role-playing ELDER SCROLL series, MORROWIND always promised to be a game of epic proportions. You'd be able to play it however you wanted to: go anywhere, do anything. You'd choose your own adventure and see everything through the eyes of the character you created. Make no mistake, MORROWIND has next to nothing in common with Japanese RPGs like the FINAL FANTASY series, in which you're more of a spectator than an active participant in the storyline. There's a very different approach here. Open-ended gameplay is the lofty goal that many computer RPGs strive for yet unsurprisingly fall short of. But MORROWIND doesn't fall short. The PC versio--which was released in early Ma--has received nothing but praises from players and critics, alike. The newly released Xbox version is identical for all intents and purposes. It's the first RPG for the system, and it's absolutely huge, which is the most amazing thing about it.
MORROWIND brings the classic conventions of PC role-playing games to the Xbox. In combination with its slick production values--from the crisp and detailed graphics to its engrossing and complex storyline--and the smooth transition from PC to console, MORROWIND gives the XBox its first rpg and it more than delivers.
The graphics takes full advantage of the XBox's built-in NVIDIA GeForce3 graphics card. The massive environments which represents the province of MORROWIND is done meticulously. One thing about MORROWIND is the many different cities and towns that inhabit the island province. Each of these places and sites have their very own architectural design which lends to creating the illusion that MORROWIND is a living, breathing world. It sure adds to the game's history which is also doen in detail through extensive writing and conversations within the game. Just learning the whole history of MORROWIND can become a quest all on its own.
The quests in MORROWIND is practically too numerous to tell in detail. There is the main quest which is the reason why your character is in MORROWIND, but there are also quests that are given when your character decides to join the many guilds, faction, great houses and cults that dot the game. This is one of the many features of the game that truly makes MORROWIND the console gaming world's first open-ended game.
Another feature of the game that sets it apart from the other rpgs in the console world is the fact that you can interact with everyone you meet in the game and your interaction with individuals you decide to talk to affect your reputation within the province. If you decide to play as a noble adventurer then you will be hailed like some all-popular hero in every town you enter. If you decide to play as a cold and calculating assassin then you're reputation in the world will be as someone to be feared. As the other reviews of the game suggests: YOU CAN PLAY ANYWAY YOU WANT.
The leveling system in MORROWIND is interesting in that its skill-based. In order to gain a level as you play through, you will need to gain a certain amount of proficiency in a select number of major and minor skills that your character's class is based on. If one of these skills is on the use of a long sword, then just constantly use a long sword in fights and duels and you gain a point that goes to leveling your character. Same goes for magic. In order to become better in magic use, you will have to use magic in some manner. Even just talking to the npcs and bartering with a merchant can help your character gain a level. This system adds almost a limitless combination in how you decide to play and level your created character. MORROWIND rewards you with experience not just from killing but from the game's more subtle gameplay.
