You'll use combat strategies to help fulfill the legacy of Goku, the greatest warrior the universe has ever known. The kidnapping of Goku's son Gohan threatens the safety of the universe. The future depends on your ability to use your powers to help Goku defeat his enemies. You play as Goku through the Saiyan, Namek, and Frieza sagas, interact with more than 75 characters while exploring a huge universe, and complete quests to build up your level of Ki, experience, and inventory. You must use Melee and Ki combat to defeat your enemies, plus you must master different energy attacks: Ki blasts, solar flare, and Kamehameha.
Buyer Reviews : Sure, we'd always wanted an American DBZ game. There were Dragon Power (adventure) for the NES and Dragon Ball GT Final Bout (fighter) for the PSX, but those were awful. Finally, a true DBZ game was going to be released in America, this one using an action-RPG styled one similar to that of Legend Of Zelda. Would this be it? The good Dragon Ball game we'd always dreamed of?
We're gonna have to keep on dreaming.
First and foremost this game is WAY OFF from the storyline, in terms of events and power proportion. When Gohan was kidnapped by Raditz in the TV series, did he waste time helping forest people with their problems? NO! He went right out and fought to save his son! Did an old wise dude teach Goku the Taiyoken/Solar Flare? NO! Tien, his life-long friend, INVENTED THAT MOVE! Why he'd learn it years after its creation from someone he didn't even know is beyond me. When he fought Raditz, did Piccolo stand around in the middle of the battlefield doing nothing? NO! Piccolo wanted the man who insulted his pride dead even more than Goku did! When Goku was crossing Snake Way, did Princess Snake knock him off? NO! Goku was sleeping in a street-sweeper and he fell out! He didn't even meet Princess Snake until his second crossing attempt! Did King Kai teach Goku the Kamehameha! NO WAY! He learned that from Master Roshi, his life-long teacher, when he was A KID! When he got back to Earth, did he stop to foil a bank robbery? NO! And since when are standard human bank robbers as powerful as a full-blooded Saiyan who received training from King Kai? Did Goku have trouble beating Nappa in the show! NONE AT ALL! In this game Nappa's stronger than Goku! And Gohan and Krillin, did they stand around in the middle of the battlefield after Goku told them to leave? NO! They didn't come back until they sensed problems! And did Goku fight Vegeta where he fought Nappa? NO! He took Vegeta to a rocky area to fight in the series! And Frieza's standard level henchmen, with power levels of about 1,500 each, would they stand a chance against a Saiyan with a power level of 180,000? NO! But in the game the henchmen are as strong as Goku himself! The dinosaurs on Namek are just as strong too, and they're nowhere near that powerful!
Then there's play control. You CANNOT move diagonally! THIS IS THE BIGGEST PAIN FOR THIS KIND OF A GAME! And, EVERY MAJOR FIGHT PLAYS EXACTLY ALIKE! If you're a die-hard DBZ fan, these differences are sure to ruin your gameplay experience.
Let's not forget the title of the game either. Legacy of GOKU. You play as him and no one else. And to make matters worse, he (and everyone else in this game) looks way too childish.
The final verdict? Rent this game or borrow it from a friend, but DO NOT PURCHASE. There are import DBZ fighting games, mostly for the Super Nintendo / Super Famicon you'd be a lot better off owning.
