Mario, since 1985, had been the dominating force in side-scrolling platform action games. And, in 1991, the new console, Super Nintendo, was ready to go. Needless to say, this title was one of the launch titles. And it fared very well. Eleven years later I still play this game on a regular basis! But, what makes it so great? Read on and find out!
-New abilities. In this game Mario can perform a spinning jump, which destroys virtually any thing under him (and if it doesn't, he'll bounce to safety!) If he performs this move while he's got the Fire Flower, he'll blast fireballs left and right! And there's the Cape. With it Mario can fly, much like the leaf in his last adventure, but if you're skilled with the cape you can stay in the air for virtually unlimited periods of time.
-Yoshi. Mario's dinosaur pal made his universal debut in this game. In this game you ride on his back, and use him to eat enemies. Each one he eats becomes a coin. And eating berries of different colors yields different results!
-Hidden levels. Many stages have hidden exits. By taking them you will often find new levels! There's a hidden Star World, with an even more hidden Special World beyond! Complete the Special World and something very interesting will happen...
If you've got a Super Nintendo, this game's one you should pick up if you didn't do so yet. But, there is also a Game Boy Advance re-release of the game, so pick up that version if you don't have the Super Nintendo one.
