Editorial Reviews :
SquareSoft has always had a sure-fire hit when releasing any of their Final Fantasy titles, and Final Fantasy VIII should be no exception. The basis of a good RPG (role-playing game) has always been the story; spectacular graphics are secondary. Final Fantasy VIII's involved and interesting story line is filled with great twists, well-developed characters, suspense, and romance. As an added bonus, the graphics are beautiful. Everything--from the low-lit jazz club to the steam-filled railroad tunnels--is gorgeous and perfectly sets the mood and tone of a scene.
The game mechanics are standard fare for an RPG: acquisition of items and spells, turn-based combat, experience points earned in combat allowing advances in levels. From exploration to battles to dialogue, Final Fantasy VIII has it all. However, Final Fantasy VIII falls to that great weakness of RPGs: random battles. While necessary for advancing in levels, the battles occur with such frequency that they can grow annoying, making for a tedious game experience.

The epic storyline spans four discs--over 40 hours of gameplay--and is based around a mercenary cadet who finds himself caught up with an underground rebel faction. He winds up in a plot to assassinate the sorceress who has just seized power from the president.

You could complain of limited replay value, but this gripe is of no consequence: the game is such a satisfying experience, it doesn't require replay. Final Fantasy VIII is easily worth both the hype and the wait. You can't buy a much better game. --John Cocking

Buyer Reviews :
This game is Awesome. Let's just say that before we start criticizing it. Now, for the criticism :). Well, first of all, the graphics are great, considering this is playstation, but squaresoft shouldn't have made the characters so elaborately designed. Yes, you heard me...make the character models simpler. The problem is that there r so many details and the playstation hardware cannot handle such detail without ...it up. As a result, the people look slightly jagged, no shading was allowed because the game would slow down even more, and it looks VERY pixellated and basically not smooth. If you ask me (well u didnt ask me but im gonna tell u neway :) ) the models should have looked simple but realistic, like the battle models in FFVII (not the normal models, those were hideously deformed) the battle models were simple and beautiful. Another thing is that the story doesn't really drown you in it. I mean, the story is immersive, but u cannot really drown in it...try to picture it, im saying that it isnt soooo extremely immersive that u feel sad and happy with the characters and that isnt good. In final fantasy VII, I almost cried when Aeris died and the music that played really did not help, it wuz so sweet that I had to cry even more (imagine a big guy like me with lotsa girlfriends crying!) and then i saw Sephiroth smiling and i wanted to beat the ...outta him. Every time Tifa made those little hints that she liked Cloud and he didnt notice, I felt bad at his stupidity and I slowly fell in love with the character. If only Final Fantasy VIII were as emotional a game. However, you cant get a perfect game ever. However, with all those flaws, this game is exceptional and the music is top notch. Out of ALL the console RPGS, FFVII is the #1 greatest, FFVIII is second, and FFVI is third. try to get em all, you wont ever regret it!
