Editorial Reviews :
Nintendo first dabbled in video games during the industry's early years of the mid-'70s. Generations of successful gaming console releases through the years led to the much-hyped 1996 launch of Nintendo 64, a system that represented a giant evolutionary leap in video game technology. Within the first three days of launch, hundreds of thousands of gamers hunkered down with Mario 64, considered by many to be one of the greatest video games ever created. Even today, the system's excellent design continues to host an ever-expanding library of breakthrough games.
Nintendo 64's popularity among younger gamers is no surprise. Well-respected games featuring such long-lived and much-loved personalities as Mario (of arcade classic Donkey Kong fame), Zelda, and Banjo-Kazooie are easy to learn and offer enormous replay value. But times are a' changin' and the system's ever-growing library of titles has expanded into every genre of games imaginable, including games better suited for older gamers. In fact, some of the most acclaimed--in some cases, groundbreaking--games available on any platform today are packed onto N64's old-school cartridges.

Under the system's hood, its appeal to the young certainly didn't produce a less mature gaming machine. On the contrary, the 64-bit system boasts impressive graphics, stereo sound, and numerous accessory enhancements, including a high-resolution pack that boosts graphics to awe-inspiring resolutions.

Start your library with Goldeneye 007, Mario 64, Banjo-Kazooie, Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time, and Star Wars: Episode One Racer--these titles represent a decent start to any N64 cartridge library.

With the recent launch of Sega's Dreamcast system, Nintendo 64 is being left behind as the leader in video game technology. And with newer game systems featuring CD-based games, the system's expensive cartridge format is proving itself an archaic and unconventional storage format. But, at a sub-$110 recommended retail price for a console with two controllers, innovative accessory enhancements and a great library of games keep the system's rabid fan base satisfied, if not eager for Nintendo's next evolutionary step. --Eric Twelker

Buyer Reviews :
Im glad I waited until someone sold me the N64 for 30 dollars instead of buying it when it came out for 200 dollars. The reason I gave it 5 stars is because it has 4 stone cold classics(Super Mario 64,Ocarina Of Time,Majora's Mask and Banjo Kazooie) but Im glad I waited until someone sold it to me for 30 bucks.Ill tell you why-there arent enough excellent games for it.When it first came out I was discouraged by the unusual controller and Mario 64 was obviously something that is great but no other games to back the system up as far as I could see.Plus I was happy with the Genesis cause I was still on my Toe Jam and Earl and Sonic The Hedgehog thing. Then the Dreamcast came out it had an amazing game(Sonic Adventure) but for some reason it got a bug or something and stopped working. Then in 2001 I was looking for a new system.I thought to myself what company has characters that are equals to Sonic and TJ&E?Why Nintendo of course.I remember the original NES had great games like the Mario series,Metroid,The Legend Of Zelda and Double Dragon. And Game Cube was clearly new generation the graphics and sound are magnificent and glorious.Plus Sonic is on the Nintendo list now,as well as Namco. And Super Mario Sunshine is a fine sequel to Mario 64 and Super Smash Bros Melee is obviously one of the best games of all time and the system has enough power so classics like the Sonic series can be emulated onto one disc although when I first bought the system those games were never gonna be rereleased and put onto the system.Hopefully Nintendo itself will follow in Sonic Teams footsteps and emulate classics like the Mario Series,The Legend Of Zelda,Metroid and F - Zero onto a disc or two.I think maybe Sonic Team and Nintendo actually do read what people put on Amazon.com so they get new ideas to please their fans. Its a possibility.
Anyways Ocarina Of Time,Perfect Dark,Super Mario 64 and Majoras Mask plus Banjo Kazooie are all classics even though I cant stand Pokemon at all.Pokemon sucks. How Pokemon got so famous is beyond me.Its way too crass and commercial and easy and boring.I cant stand Pokemon in the least. But the other games like Mario 64 more than make up for a miserable waste like Pokemon.
